Being Irish I’m allowed to tell this story!

There’s a well known joke about a tourist in Ireland who asks one of the locals for directions to Dublin.

The Irishman replies: ‘Well sir, if I were you, I wouldn’t start from here’.

I can honestly say that for me, personally, my journey only really started when I began to understand who I was on the inside. And so true also for the teams and organisations that I've worked in; I've needed to take the time to understand what makes them tick or not tick, often referred to as their values or culture.

Right now, being in a place of knowing, feels just right. While getting here hasn't been easy, it's been worth it and I have so many people and circumstances to thank for that.

My Own Story

In October 2011, following my father’s death, I realised just how unhealthy I was and embarked on what became quite a transformation.  I was significantly overweight, unfit and stressed from working too many hours in a tough GP job. Over 2-3 years I managed to lose almost 4 stone in weight, get fit and following a mental health crisis, took the time to invest in my emotional wellbeing. My claim to fame is that my story, complete with photos, was published in the Daily Mail (!) in 2014. Over a decade on, I’m proud to say that I’m still on that journey!

In 2010, I was privileged to be invited to join GenerationQ, a (Health Foundation and Ashridge) leadership and quality improvement programme. As well as being a catalyst for developing self awareness as a leader it prompted my attention to team and organisational culture, noticing both healthy and unhealthy patterns of behaviour, and lots in between. From 2012 to 2023, I continued to work as GP and leadership work in the NHS, envisioning and leading a number of quality developments, notably including the merger of 4 GP practices to maintain healthcare provision in a Shropshire market town.

From 2019 to 2022, based on my ongoing interest in mental and emotional health, I completed a diploma with the Human Givens College. In 2023, my interest broaded into the wider world of coaching as an means of being of service to others. I’ve been working with Michael Neil, an internationally renowned coach and  best-selling author. I've completed his “Genius Catalyst”certification and am currently loving his “Living Fearlessly” programme.

Michael’s coaching is based on the 3 Principles, an understanding of how the human experience is created. For me, this understanding has, and continues to, shed a lot of light on my last decade, getting to know myself personally and in the context of life and work relationships. Michael and many others often refer to the 3 Principles, as an understanding how life works from an inside-out (rather than outside-in) perspective. Check back here in a couple of weeks to read a little more of my take on this.

I’m based in Chester, England where I continue to work as a GP. I am an Associate with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, co-chair of a small charity supporting men with their emotional and spiritual wellbeing and learning to speak German(!).

My offer to you, your teams and organisations

Perhaps you, or your team or organisation, know roughly where you want to get to with your life, career or business, but aren't sure how to get there. Or maybe you don't?

Sometimes, simply a fresh pair of eyes or ears can be useful.

While, of course, I can't know what's right for you, I offer, support for you to:

  • Discover where you are, and ask where you want to go,

  • Overcome limiting fear or uncertainty,

  • Shift from unhealthy patterns

  • Or make another change.

Let's chat and see what comes up! We can meet in-person or on zoom. Remember there's no charge for our first two (or three) conversations.
